Wightman Petrie was hired by the City of South Bend, Indiana as the lead designer for a major renovation to the Coveleski Stadium and it’s surrounding campus. This ballpark was over 25 years old and, while once a trendsetter in ball park design, was in need of modernization and repairs.
This project consisted of the development of a 360-degree concourse that included terraced picnic areas in both left and right fields, a new home run deck in left field, an 8,500 sqft commissary building, renovations to the existing suites and press box, the renovation of an existing Indiana Historic Landmarks Building into the new Team Store, a water splash pad, a performance stage, a new center field entrance, batting cages, and a new kids fun zone.In addition, the existing natural turf field will be replaced with synthetic turf to minimize maintenance costs and to allow for additional on-field venues.
The site design concept in and around the park focused on pedestrian and visual connectivity to the downtown. The design will provide pedestrian corridors and plazas, enable better traffic flow of surrounding streets, better manage game time traffic volumes, and create commercial and entertainment opportunities.
